DIFFICULTIES GETTING EMAIL?
Q. I'm having trouble getting my email. Outlook Express says it
can't find the server.
A. First, make sure Outlook Express isn't configured to
disconnect after sending/receiving. If you're offline without noticing
it, Outlook Express certainly can't find the server. See how.
Q. That's not the problem - still can't find the server.
A.
Have you recently installed or updated antivirus software? Some
versions alter critical settings in Outlook Express and then fail to
account for those changes in the way they work.
In fact, any time you have difficulties with
Outlook Express, it's worth checking the settings:
- Open Outlook Express and work offline
- In the Menu Bar, click "Tools", "Accounts", "Mail" tab
- Click the "Properties" button for the relevant account
- Click the "Servers" tab
- The "Incoming Mail server" name should be pop.becon.org
- The "Outgoing Mail server" name should be mail.becon.org
- The "Account Name" should be your username (login) (not your
entire email address)
- Click the "Connection" tab
- Make sure that there is a checkmark beside "Always connect
to this account using:", and that "BEC" (or equivalent) shows in the
field below
- Click "Apply", "OK", and "Close"
Q. The settings are OK, but I still get the same error message.
A. First, make sure that you can access Websites. When
connected, ensure that you're looking at a current copy by refreshing
the page.
If you can't browse, you won't be able to find the mailserver either.
The usual cure is to simply restart your computer. Many perplexing
Windows problems can be solved in that way.
If a restart doesn't solve the problem, check your
settings in the properties of your dialup networking connection and in
Control Panel according to instructions on the Helpdesk page.
If your
settings appear to be correct but you still cannot browse, TCP/IP may be
corrupted on your computer. If you are unsure how to reinstall it,
please call the Helpdesk sometime when you can be at your computer, and
ensure that you have your Windows CD handy.
If you can browse to Websites but Outlook Express still won't
download mail, try compacting your folders. In the Menu Bar click
"File", point to "Folder", click on "Compact all folders".
Something may have gone wrong with Outlook Express.
This can usually be solved by downloading an upgraded version of
Internet Explorer/Outlook Express. If you aren't sure how to upgrade,
check our FAQ , How
to upgrade your browser and email software
Q. Are there other options?
A. Remember Webmail - you can check your mail from
anywhere in the world using a browser, as long as you have an Internet
connection: instructions,
Webmail.
There are many other email clients. Try downloading Thunderbird,
for example.
