Windows 98 - Making a Connection to the BEC Community Network


1. Make a new connection

  • Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop
  • Double-click the "Dial-up Networking" icon (If there are any unnecessary connections already in the window, delete them)
  • Double-click "Make New Connection"
  • In the "Make New Connection" window, type "BEC" in the "Name" field; click "Next"
  • Make sure the area code is 905 and country code is Canada. Enter the telephone #: 684-9089 (or 563-6330 only from the Grimsby calling area)
  • Click "Next", then "Finish""



  • 2. Configure the new connection:

  • On the Menu bar click "File", then "Properties"
  • On the "General" tab, make sure there is a checkmark beside "Use area code and dialing properties"
  • your modem should appear in the "Connect using" field
  • click the "Configure" button
  • On the "General" tab, under "Maximum speed", select 57600
  • click "OK"
  • Click the "Server Types" tab
  • You should see "PPP etc." under "Type of Dial-Up Server"
  • Remove all checkmarks except "TCP/IP" at the bottom
  • Click "OK"



  • 3. Check dialing properties:

  • Double-click the "BEC" icon
  • Click the "Dial Properties" button
  • Make sure the area code is 905 and the country code is Canada. The small fields "Dial __ for an outside line" and "Dial __ for long distance" should normally be blank.
  • If your telephone line has Call Waiting, check the appropriate box. To disable it, dial "*70,," (two commas). If you do not have Call Waiting, make sure there is not a checkmark in the box.
  • If your telephone line is not touch-tone, select "Pulse"
  • Click the "Area Code Rules" button: make sure there is a checkmark in the checkbox beside "Always dial the area code (10-digit dialing)"
  • Click "OK" and "OK" - ensure that the number at the bottom shows 905-684-9089 (or 905-563-6330 ONLY from the Grimsby calling area; click "Cancel"
  • Close the "Dial-up Networking" window



  • 4. Check Control Panel Settings

  • Click the Start button, --> Settings --> Control Panel
  • Double-click the "Network" icon
  • "Configuration" tab: for most people the only essential components are "Dialup Adapter" and "TCP/IP". "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "Microsoft Family Logon"are usually present - just leave them there.
    You may also see other components, such as Ethernet. Other protocols such as "IPX/SPX" and "NetBEUI" should be removed if they are present but not needed.
  • Highlight "TCP/IP" (If you have more than one instance of TCP/IP, select "TCP/IP --> Dialup Adapter")
  • click the "Properties" button, click "OK" at the Windows warning
  • "IP Address" tab: "Obtain an IP address automatically" must be selected
  • "WINS Configuration" tab: select "Disable WINS resolution"
  • "Gateway" tab: no numbers anywhere on this tab
  • "DNS Configuration" tab: "Disable DNS" should be selected
  • Click "OK" & "OK"


  • (If you made changes, Windows will ask you to restart; click "No" at this stage and instead restart at the end of these instructions)

  • Close Control Panel



  • 5. Configure Internet Explorer
  • Click with the right mouse button on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, then click "Properties". If you see several tabs along the top, proceed directly to "General" tab below.
  • If you see only two tabs at the top, close that window and instead start Internet Explorer (double-click the desktop icon); click the "Work offline" or "Cancel" button if a dialup connection appears

  • Click Tools | Internet Options
  • "General" tab: Home Page address is http://niagara.becon.org
  • "Connections" tab: "BEC default" should be visible in the "Dial-up Settings" window; "Always dial my default connection" should be selected; "Perform system security check before dialing" should be checked
  • Click the "Settings" button; in the "User name" field type your login; click "OK"
  • Programs tab: in the "E-mail" field, make sure Outlook Express is selected
  • Click "Apply" & "OK"



  • 6. Configure Outlook Express

  • Start Outlook Express (double-click the desktop icon, or click the Outlook Express icon in the Quicklaunch toolbar beside the Start button, or click Start--> Programs --> Outlook Express)
  • and work offline

  • Click "Tools" in the menu bar, then "Accounts"
  • Click the "Mail" tab
  • If there are accounts listed (e.g. from previous services) that are no longer needed, remove them
  • If there are no accounts listed in the window, click the "Add" button, then "Mail", and follow the wizard using the information below
  • "General" tab:
  • "Mail Account" is a "friendly name" we suggest "BEC Mail"
  • "Name" - how you want your name to appear when you send mail
  • "E-mail address" - your own (yourlogin@becon.org)
  • "Reply address" - leave blank
  • "Servers" tab - type of server is POP3
  • "Incoming mail (POP3)" - pop.becon.org
  • "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" - mail.becon.org
  • "Account name" is your login
  • leaving the password blank and the "Remember password" checkbox empty provides security (you’ll be asked to enter it at the appropriate time)
  • NO checkmarks beside any lines that refer to authentication
  • "Connection" tab:
  • check "Always connect to this account using", & make sure "BEC" is visible in the field below.)
  • Click "Apply" & "OK", then close the "Internet Accounts" window
  • Click "Tools" in the menu bar, then "Options"
  • "Connection" tab: no checkmark beside "Hang up..."
  • "General" tab: place a checkmark beside "When starting, go directly to my ‘Inbox’ folder"
  • Click "Apply" and "OK"



  • 7. Close all programs and restart the computer.


    To connect to the Internet, start Internet Explorer (for Web browsing) or Outlook Express (for email), or any other similar software.

    Type your password in the dial-up connection window & click "Connect".
    You may hear dialing and noise from the modem (the "handshake"), then see a "verifying password" window. A small icon that looks like two linked computers should appear near the clock, indicating that you’re connected.

    To disconnect without closing the program, right-click on that icon, then click "Disconnect".


    Changing your password

    New clients are encouraged to change their password once familiar with the new connection.

    To change your password on the Community Network system at any time (when connected), click the "Change password" link on niagara.becon.org. Type in your login & current password, then follow instructions.

    Remember that this instructs the Community Network servers to change your password. If you have chosen to tell your computer to "remember" or "save" your password, you will need to type in the new one.
