Configuring Internet Explorer / Outlook Express / Windows Mail (for new DSL setups)

  1. Connect cables and DSL modem:
    • Connect the power adapter cord to the DSL modem.
    • Connect the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem to the computer's Ethernet card.
    • Connect the telephone line from your wall jack or surge protector to the DSL modem. This line must NOT have a line filter installed.


    If your DSL modem is configured in router mode, it is not necessary to create a connection. If you need to create a PPPoE connection, see here.


  2. Configure Internet Explorer (and/or a browser of your choice)
    • In the menu bar of Internet Explorer, click "Tools", then "Internet Options"
    • "General" tab: in the "Home Page address" field, type http://niagara.becon.org
    • "Connections" tab: "Never dial a connection" should be selected.
    • Click "OK"


  3. Configure Outlook Express (Windows XP and earlier) (and/or email software of your choice)
    • In the menu bar of Outlook Express, click "Tools", "Accounts", "Mail" tab

    If a mail account already exists, you can remove it and create a new one:
    • Click "Add", then "Mail"
    • In the "Display name" field, type your name as you want others to see it; click "Next"
    • Type in your email address; click "Next"
    • In the "Incoming mail" field, type pop.becon.org; in the "Outgoing mail" field type mail.becon.org; click "Next"
    • Your account name should appear. If you wish to enter your password manually each time, uncheck "Save Password"; otherwise, type in your password.
    • Click "Next", then "Finish". If you do not see the "Internet Accounts" window, click "Tools" in the menu bar, then "Accounts" and "Mail" tab.
    • Click the Properties button
    • Click the Connection tab
      • Place a checkmark in the checkbox beside "Always connect to this account using"; "Local Area Network" should appear beneath
      • Click the Servers tab; add a checkmark beside "My server requires authentication"
      • Click OK and close the Internet Accounts window

    OR

    3. Configure Windows Mail (Windows Vista)
    • Open Windows Mail
    • In the menu bar, click Tools | Accounts | Add button. Select "E-mail Account" and click Next.
    • In the "Display name" field, type your name as you want others to see it; click "Next"
    • Type in your email address; click Next
    • In the "Incoming mail" field, type pop.becon.org; in the "Outgoing mail" field type mail.becon.org; click Next
    • Your username should appear. If you want Windows Mail to remember your password, enter it. Otherwise, remove the checkmark from "Remember password". Click Next.
    • Check "Do not download mail at this time". Click Finish
    • Click the Properties button
    • Click the Connection tab
    • Place a checkmark in the checkbox beside "Always connect to this account using"; "Local Area Network" should appear beneath
    • Click OK and close the Internet Accounts window



    Changing your password

    To change your password on the Community Network system, click the "Change password" link on niagara.becon.org and follow instructions. Remember that this changes your password on the Community Network servers; if you have saved your password on your computer or router, it will also need to be changed.

    If you purchased a GNet modem/router from BEC, follow instructions provided when you picked up the modem.
