WINDOWS XP - MAKING A DSL (HIGH-SPEED) CONNECTION TO THE BEC
COMMUNITY NETWORK
- Connect the DSL modem
- Connect the power adapter cord to the DSL modem.
- Connect the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem to the computer's Ethernet
card.
- Connect the telephone line from your wall jack or surge protector to the DSL
modem. This line must NOT have a line filter installed.
If your DSL modem is configured in router mode, it is not necessary to create
a connection. To connect to the Internet after completing steps 3 & 4, turn on the
modem; when the link light shows steady green, you're online.
Skip Step 2 and proceed to Step 3 to configure Internet Explorer and Outlook
Express.
If your DSL modem is not configured as a router, you will need to
create a connection and log in each time you wish to connect. Proceed to Step 2.
- Create a new connection (only if the DSL modem is not in router
mode)
- Click Start | Control Panel, double-click Network Connections; or
Start | Connect to | Show all connections
- Double-click the New Connection Wizard icon, click Next
- Make sure "Connect to the Internet" is selected; click Next
- Select "Set up my connection manually", click Next
- Select "Connect using a broadband connection that uses a user name and
password"; click Next
- In the ISP Name field, type BEC-DSL; click Next
- For connection availability, select as appropriate; click Next
- In the User name field, type yourlogin@becon.org [using your own
username]. Type in your password if you want Windows to remember it; otherwise, leave the
password fields blank at this stage. Leave both checkboxes checked unless you have reasons
to uncheck them.
- Click Next, then Finish. A connect window will open; cancel to complete
configuration.
- Configure Internet Explorer (and/or a browser of your choice)
- In the Menu Bar of Internet Explorer, click "Tools", then "Internet
Options"
- "General" tab: in the "Home Page address" field, type
http://niagara.becon.org
- "Connections" tab:
- If you created a connection, you should see "BEC-DSL (Default)" in the
upper field; make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected.
- If your modem is configured in router mode and you did not create a connection,
simply make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected.
- Click "Apply" and "OK"
- Configure Outlook Express (and/or email software of your choice)
- In the Menu Bar of Outlook Express, click "Tools", then "Accounts", then the
"Mail" tab
If this computer has never had an Internet connection, probably this
window is blank. Proceed to B) below.
If a mail account already exists in Outlook Express, you can normally edit
its settings: proceed to A) below and skip B).
A) These steps show how to edit an existing mail account's
settings:
- If you are upgrading from dialup service with the BEC Community Network to DSL
and are keeping the same email address, only one setting needs to be changed:
- Click the Properties button | Connection tab; remove the checkmark from "Always
connect to this account using", click Apply, OK, Close. You're done.
- If you need to edit other settings:
- Click the Properties button
- On the "General" tab, in the "User Information" section, make
sure that the name and email address are correct
- On the "Servers" tab, "Incoming mail (POP3)" field, should be
pop.becon.org, "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" should be
mail.becon.org, "Account name" is your username (login) (NOT
your entire address!)
- On the "Connection" tab, uncheck "Always connect to this account using"
- Click "Apply", "OK", and "Close". Skip B) below - you're all done
B) If there is not a mail account in the window, add one using the wizard:
- Click "Add", then "Mail"
- In the "Display name" field, type your name as you want others
to see it; click "Next"
- Type in your email address; click "Next"
- In the "Incoming mail" field, type pop.becon.org; in
the "Outgoing
mail" field type mail.becon.org; click "Next"
- Your account name should appear. If you wish to enter your password manually
each time, uncheck "Save Password"; otherwise, type in your password.
- Click "Next", then "Finish". Configuration is complete.
Changing your password
To change your password on the Community Network system, click the "Change
password" link on niagara.becon.org and follow
instructions. Remember that this changes your password on the Community Network servers;
if you have saved your password on your computer, it will of course be the old one - you
will need to begin entering the new one.
If your DSL modem is configured as a router, the router is logging in on
your behalf using the password you stored in it. If you change your password on the
Community Network system, you must also change it in the router configuration.
If you purchased a GNet modem/router from BEC, here is how to change your
password on the router:
- Make sure your modem is turned on and the Ethernet cable is connected to your
computer
- Open a browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.
- In the Address Bar, type 192.168.7.1 & press Enter on the keyboard
- A login dialog box should open. The username and password are both DSL
- When you enter the router configuration pages, DO NOT change anything
other than your password!!
- Click the Home tab (upper left)
- Click the Quick Configuration link (top)
- Scroll down to the Password field; delete all the ****** and enter your new
password
- Click the Submit button at the bottom
- Click the Admin tab in the upper right, click the "Commit and Reboot" link,
click the Submit button
- Click "Commit and Reboot" again, then click the Reboot button
- Turn the modem off and on
