WINDOWS 7 - MAKING A DSL (HIGH-SPEED) PPPoE CONNECTION TO
BEC INTERNET SERVICES

Click here to open a printable version of this document.

These instructions are for creating a DSL connection in Windows Vista. If your DSL modem is configured in routing mode or if you use a wireless router, you do not need to create a connection in Windows.

  1. Connect the DSL modem
    • Connect the power adapter cord to the DSL modem.
    • Connect the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem to the computer's Ethernet port.
    • Connect the telephone line from your wall jack to the DSL modem. This line must NOT have a line filter installed.

  2. Create a new connection (only if the DSL modem is not in routing mode)
    • Click Start | Control Panel | Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Center
    • Click "Set up a connection or network"
    • Click "Connect to the Internet", click Next
    • Select "Broadband (PPPoE)"
    • In the Username field, type your entire email address
    • Enter your password; check the Remember Password box if you want Windows to remember your password
    • In the Connection Name field, type BEC-DSL-PPPoE
    • Click Connect
    • To place a shortcut on your desktop, click Start | Control Panel | Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Center | Change Adapter Settings; right-click the BEC-DSL-PPPoE icon, click Create Shortcut, click OK.
When you later want to connect, double-click that icon

  3. Configure Internet Explorer (and/or a browser of your choice)
    • In the menu bar of Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet Options
      • General tab: in the "Home Page address" field, type http://niagara.becon.org
      • Connections tab: make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected
    • Click OK
