WINDOWS XP - MAKING A DSL (HIGH-SPEED) PPPoE CONNECTION TO BEC
INTERNET SERVICES
printable version of this document.
These instructions are for creating a DSL connection in Windows XP.
If your DSL modem is configured in routing mode or if you use a wireless
router, you do not need to create a connection in Windows.
- Connect the DSL modem
- Connect the power adapter cord to the DSL modem.
- Connect the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem to the computer's
Ethernet
card.
- Connect the telephone line from your wall jack to the DSL modem.
This line must NOT have a line filter installed.
- Create a new connection (only if the DSL modem is
not in routing mode)
- Click Start | Control Panel, double-click Network Connections;
or
Start | Connect to | Show all connections
- Double-click the New Connection Wizard icon, click Next
- Make sure "Connect to the Internet" is selected; click Next
- Select "Set up my connection manually", click Next
- Select "Connect using a broadband connection that uses a user name
and
password"; click Next
- In the ISP Name field, type BEC-DSL-PPPoE; click Next
- For connection availability, select as appropriate; click Next
- In the User name field, type yourlogin@becon.org [using your
own
username]. Type in your password if you want Windows to remember it;
otherwise, leave the
password fields blank at this stage. Leave both checkboxes checked unless you
have reasons
to uncheck them.
- Click Next, then Finish. A connect window will open; cancel to
complete
configuration.
- Configure Internet Explorer (and/or a browser of your choice)
- In the menu bar of Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet
Options
- General tab: in the "Home Page address" field, type
http://niagara.becon.org
- Connections tab: make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected
- Click OK
- Configure Outlook Express (and/or email software of your
choice)
- In the menu bar of Outlook Express, click Tools | Accounts |
Mail tab
If this computer has never had an Internet connection, probably this
window is blank. Proceed to B) below.
If a mail account already exists in Outlook Express, you can normally edit
its settings: proceed to A) below and skip B).
A) These steps show how to edit an existing mail account's
settings:
- If you are upgrading from dialup to DSL service with BEC Internet Services and are keeping the same
email address:
- Click the Properties button | Connection tab; below "Always
connect to this account using", click the drop-down arrow and select "Local
Area Network"
- On the Servers tab, check the box "My server requires authentication"
- If you need to edit other settings:
- On the General tab, in the User Information section, make
sure that the name and email address are correct
- On the Servers tab, "Incoming mail (POP3)" field, should be
pop.becon.org, "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" should be
mail.becon.org, "Account name" is your username (login) (NOT
your entire address!)
- Click OK and Close. Skip B) below.
B) If there is not a mail account in the window, add one using the wizard:
- Click Add, then Mail
- In the "Display name" field, type your name as you want others
to see it; click Next
- Type in your email address; click Next
- In the "Incoming mail" field, type pop.becon.org; in
the "Outgoing
mail" field type mail.becon.org; click Next
- Your account name should appear. If you wish to enter your
password manually
each time, uncheck "Save Password"; otherwise, type in your password.
- Click Next, then Finish.
- Click the Properties button | Connection tab:
below "Always
connect to this account using", click the drop-down arrow and select "Local
Area Network"; on the Servers tab, check the box "My server requires authentication"
- Click OK and Close
