Windows Vista - Making a Dialup Connection to the BEC Community Network

  1. Create a new connection
    • Click the Start button | Control Panel | Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Center (or Start | Connect to)
    • Click "Set up a connection or network"
    • Click "Set up a dialup connection", click "Next"
    • Your modem should appear. If it does not, a modem is not properly installed on your computer. A modem must be installed before you can proceed.
    • In the appropriate fields, enter the following:
      • Dial-up phone number: 905-684-9089 (or 905-563-6330 from the Grimsby area only). If your phone line has Call Waiting, add *70,, (two commas) before the phone number.
      • Username - yours (also called login or account name)
      • Password (if you want Windows to remember it)
      • Connection name: BEC
    • Click Connect | Skip | Set up the connection anyway | Close (or, the connection can be tested from this point)

(To check the number your computer will dial, click Start | Connect To; right-click the BEC item, click Properties | Dialing Rules button; “Use dialing rules” box must be checked to view the number.)

  2. Configure Internet Explorer
    • Open Internet Explorer and work offline (no need to connect)
    • If the normal menu bar is not visible (IE7), click Tools in the upper right, then click on Menu Bar
    • Click "Tools" in the menu bar, then "Internet Options"
    • On the "General" tab, in the Home Page "Address" field type http://niagara.becon.org
    • Click the "Connections" tab - you should see "BEC (Default)" in the upper field; make sure "Always dial my default connection" is selected
    • Click "OK"

  3. Configure Windows Mail
    • Click "Start" | "Windows Mail", and work offline (no need to connect)
    • In the menu bar, click "Tools" | "Accounts" | "Add" button. Select "E-mail Account" and click "Next".
    • In the "Display name" field, type your name as you want others to see it; click "Next"
    • Type in your email address; click "Next"
    • In the "Incoming mail" field, type pop.becon.org; in the "Outgoing mail" field type mail.becon.org; click "Next"
    • Your username should appear. If you want Windows Mail to remember your password, enter it. Otherwise, remove the checkmark from "Remember password". Click "Next".
    • Check "Do not download mail at this time". Click "Finish".
    • Click the "Properties" button
    • Click the "Connection" tab
    • Place a checkmark in the checkbox beside "Always connect to this account using"; "BEC" should appear beneath
    • Click "OK" and "Close" the Internet Accounts window
  4. Close Windows Mail

To connect to the Internet, open Internet Explorer (for Web browsing) or Windows Mail, or other similar software.
Make sure your password is in the Password field, then click "Connect".
You may hear dialing and noise from the modem (the "handshake"), then see a "verifying password" window. A small icon that looks like two linked computers should appear near the computer clock, indicating that you're connected.
To disconnect without closing the program, right-click on that icon, then click "Disconnect".

Changing your password

To change your password on the Community Network system at any time, click the "Change password" link on niagara.becon.org and follow instructions.

Remember that this changes your password on the Community Network servers. If your computer is already "remembering" your password, it will of course remember the old one; you will need to delete the old password from your computer and type in the new one.
