    • Click "My Network Places"
    • Click "View Network Connections"
    • Click "Create a New Connection" (If you don't see "Create a New Connection", click the double drop-down arrow beside "Network Tasks")
    Follow the wizard:
    • Click "Next"
    • Select "Connect to the Internet"; click "Next"
    • Select "Set up my connection manually"; click "Next"
    • Select "Connect using a dial-up modem"; click "Next"

    • Type your username (login) in the "User name" field. (It is recommended that you leave the password fields blank. The dialup procedure will wait at the appropriate time for you to manually enter your password. You can then change your password on the Community Network system without having to change it on your computer too.)
    • Click "Next"
    • Under most circumstances you do NOT need to select "Add a shortcut"; click "Finish"
    • Close the "Connect BEC" window

  2. Check connection properties
A new icon called "BEC" will appear in the "Network Connections" window.
    • Click on the "BEC" icon with the right mouse button, then click "Properties"
    • Click the "Configure" button
      • In the "Maximum speed" field, select 57600
      • Place a checkmark beside "Enable modem error control"
      • Click "OK"
    • If your telephone line does not have Call Waiting and if it is a touch-tone line, click "OK"; otherwise proceed with the steps below.

        • Place a checkmark in the "Use dialing rules" checkbox
        • Enter "905" in the "Area code" field and select "Canada" in the "Country/region code" field
        • Click the "Dialing Rules" button
        • Click the "Edit" button
        • If your line has Call Waiting, place a checkmark in the "To disable call waiting, dial:" checkbox; type *70,, in the field
        • If you have a pulse (rotary) line, select "Pulse"

  4. Configure Outlook Express
    • Click "Start" | "Outlook Express", and work offline (do not connect)
    • In the Menu Bar, click "Tools", then "Accounts", then the "Mail" tab

If this computer has never had an Internet connection, probably this window is blank. Proceed to B) below.
If a mail account already exists in Outlook Express, you can simply edit its settings: proceed to A) below and skip B).

    A) These steps show how to edit an existing mail account's settings:
    • Click the "Properties" button
    • On the "General" tab, in the "User Information" section, make sure that the name and email address are correct
    • Click the "Servers" tab
    • In the "Incoming mail (POP3)" field, type pop.becon.org
    • In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" field, type mail.becon.org
    • In the "Account name" field, type your username (login) (NOT your entire address!)
    • Click the "Connection" tab
    • Place a checkmark in the box for "Always connect to this account using"; "BEC" should appear beneath
    • Click "Apply" & "OK" , Close the "Internet Accounts" window, and close Outlook Express
      [skip B) below - you're all done]

    B) If there is not a mail account in the window, add one using the wizard:
    • Click "Add", then "Mail"
    • In the "Display name" field, type your name as you want others to see it; click "Next"
    • Type in your email address; click "Next"
    • In the "Incoming mail" field, type pop.becon.org; in the "Outgoing mail" field type mail.becon.org; click "Next"
    • Your account name should appear at the top. It's recommended that you remove the checkmark from the "Remember password" box; Outlook Express will wait at the appropriate time for you to enter your password manually. Click "Next".
    • Click "Finish"
      • If you do not see the "Internet Accounts" window, click "Tools" in the Menu Bar, then "Accounts" and "Mail" tab
    • Click the "Properties" button
    • Click the "Connection" tab
    • ú
    • Place a checkmark in the checkbox beside "Always connect to this account using"; "BEC" should appear beneath
    • Click "Apply" and "OK" and Close the "Internet Accounts" window

  5. Close Outlook Express

To connect to the Internet, open Internet Explorer (for Web browsing) or Outlook Express (for email), or other similar software.

Make sure your password is in the "Password" field of the connection dialog box, then click "Connect" (or "Dial").

You may hear dialing and noise from the modem (the handshake), then see a "verifying password" window. A small icon that looks like two linked computers should appear near the clock, indicating that you're connected.

To disconnect without closing the program, right-click on that icon, then click "Disconnect".

Changing your password

New clients are encouraged to change their password once familiar with the new connection.

To change your password on the Community Network system at any time (when connected), click the "Change password" link on niagara.becon.org. Type in your login & current password first, then follow instructions.

Remember that this instructs the Community Network servers to change your password. If you have chosen to tell your computer to save your password, it will of course "remember" the old one. You will need to delete the old password from your own computer, and type in the new one.
