How to tell if your computer has an Ethernet card

How to tell if your computer has a network card:
  • Check the back of your computer:
An Ethernet card has a port that looks very similar to the port on the dialup modem where you insert the phone jack. But it's a little wider, and inside there are eight tiny wires instead of the two or four found in a dialup modem.

  • Check Device Manager in Windows:
    • In Windows 98 and ME, right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, click Properties, click the Device Manager tab.
    • In Windows 2000 and XP, right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button. (If you don't see My Computer on the desktop, open Control Panel, then open the System icon.)

    • In the list of devices, open the Network Adapters category by clicking the + symbol to the left of the item. An Ethernet adapter should be listed there if it is physically present in your computer. Right-click and click Properties to ensure it is enabled and working properly.

  • Control Panel should also indicate a network card, under Network Connections
